On January 2nd, 2006, Pasadena’s annual Rose Parade suffered a deluge of rain it had not seen for 51 years, just four months after Hurricane Katrina. Like urban survivalists, middle-class American spectators build makeshift tarp shelters, huddle around portable fire pits and sleep in rain ponchos on the sidewalk, transforming Pasadena’s upscale shopping district and suburban neighborhoods into what resembles a tent city. Filmed from a car traveling along Colorado Boulevard, the passing vignettes reflect an image of a disposable society waiting for a new day to dawn.
